FreshWater Cleveland Shares Ben’s Story

Jun 24, 2021 | Blog

Ben’s long-awaited dream of living independently has finally become a reality for him – and me! FreshWater Cleveland just shared his story today, written by editor/journalist, Karin Connelly Rice!  Hope you enjoy reading the story and can share it with families who might benefit!

Ben’s Journey highlights in 2021:

Our first steps in January 2021 were focused on installing technology. That stage took some trust-building, as we learned how to operate and TRUST gadgets, while we developed relationships with our technical support staff at SafeinHome. I was still very hands-on in January – and very anxious whenever I left Ben on his own. Six months later, Ben’s adaptive technologies have been the most reliable support he has had!

The next leg of our Journey (as I moved out) in February was improving Ben’s daily safety with home modifications – banisters, hand rails, shower bars, removing old 1929 heaters and a gas fireplace, and replacing plush rugs with a safer, low pile rugs with rubberized backings.

The third passage in March was the hardest – finding safe, reliable home care support or aides for 3:30-7:30 pm coverage. Once Ben and I got our vaccines, we felt safe to begin the search. But there is nation-wide shortage in staffing!  We returned to our past support agency and after a few tries, Ben enjoys practicing independent living skills and community outings with his new “buddy”, his male aide. I will write separate blog post on each of these stages and resources.

We both feel a sense of “arrival” in June since Ben began at his day program, offering a blend of recreational, community and pre-vocational activities.  Their comfortable van picks him up at home, he spends the day with new friends and caring staff.

I will write more about each of these supports in upcoming blogs and e-newsletter! Sign up anytime and thanks for your interest!
